"ซูฟีมิใช่ลัทธิ ซูฟีมีรากศัพท์ดั้งเดิมที่หมายถึงผู้ศรัทธาที่นุ่งห่มขนสัตว์ในยุคโบราณ 
แต่ถ้าจะแปลในบริบทศาสนาก็หมายถึงมุสลิมที่เข้าถึง Tasawwuf อย่างเป็นธรรมชาติ 

'นักบวชอิสลาม' มีรากฐานจากซูฟี การบวชอิสลามที่แท้จริงไม่ใช่เพียงการทำละศีลอด แต่ต้องรู้จักการ ตะซาววุฟ และ 'Zuhd' (สละวัตถุภายนอก) บวกกับหมั่น 'Dhikr' (การเอ่ยนามพระผู้เป็นเจ้า) 
และสามารถเข้าฌานบรรลุ 'Haqiqåt' (ความรู้ลึกลับจากพระเจ้า) 
แล้วบรรลุสัจธรรมขั้นสูงสุดที่เรียกว่า 'Marifa' ด้วยการเข้าถึงแก่นแท้การดำรงอยู่ของอัลลอฮ์ ('Haqiqat al-Dhat', 'Dhat Allah')

แม้อุลามาอฺบางท่านจะถูกมองว่าเป็น 'นักบวช' แต่ถ้าจะเปรียบกับศาสนาอื่นก็ต้องแยกให้ชัด คำว่า 'พระ' ไว้ใช้เรียกนักบวชพุทธ ถ้าคริสต์ก็บาทหลวง ถ้าอิสลามส่วนมากจะเรียกว่า 'มุลลอฮ์' 

นักบวชอิสลามในภาษาอังกฤษคือ 'Islamic cleric' อิสลามมีนักบวชที่ทำหน้าที่เป็นผู้นำจิตวิญญาณ เทศนา และตัดสินข้อเท็จจริงตามหลักกฎหมายอิสลาม 

ส่วนคนที่ไม่เข้าใจรากฐานการบวชอิสลาม บางคนอาจบอกว่าอิสลามไม่มีนักบวช ซึ่งเป็นความเข้าใจผิดเพราะไม่เข้าใจแก่นแท้ของการบวชอิสลามที่แท้จริง"
